They introduced S5 and S7 certification for vehicle tracking systems, verifying product functionality, design, and performance. Thatcham acts as a governing body, not a tracker brand.

S5, the highest Thatcham category, incorporates Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR). This feature requires an authorized driver to carry a tag, card, or smartphone with an encrypted app to identify themselves. S7 trackers, the lower category, lack this feature. An S5 tracker provides alerts in more theft scenarios compared to an S7 tracker. Apart from driver recognition, both S5 and S7 systems share basic features like 24/7 control room monitoring, internal backup battery, and protection against towing or lifting. Additionally, all S5 and S7 trackers (except Tracker Monitor and Tracker Retrieve) come with a dedicated smartphone app for various functionalities.

Unlike S5 and S7 categories, S5+ is not a Thatcham category but a trade term for an S5 tracker with remote immobilization. Remote immobilization enables the 24/7 control center staff to immobilize the vehicle in a theft situation. While immobilization is not a Thatcham requirement, it serves as a valuable tool against vehicle theft. Some S5+ trackers allow customers to remotely immobilize the vehicle using a smartphone app. Other systems include "no tag, no start" technology, preventing the vehicle from starting without the Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR) tag in proximity.
